Brief Description:  AV8OR/DigiTrak integration

The Honeywell/Bendix AV8OR uses a mini-USB to DB9 serial cable adapter for the data output. I wired a DB9 connector into the DigiTrak to receive the GPS data stream from the AV8OR. It took some experimenting to determine things were working correctly. I spent some time trying to read the data output stream from the AV8OR with my laptop in the shop. Eventually I figured out the DB9 serial port on the computer doesn't work. Using another vintage computer, my newer ones lacking a DB9 connector, I could see the data stream from pin 5 (gnd) and pin 3 from the AV8OR using Hyperterminal software. I wired these two lines to the DigiTrak J101, pin 8 gnd and pin 3 serial input. Once both the AV8OR and DigiTrak were configured for 9800 baud, the DigiTrak saw the data stream.

Determined that the Altrak pitch servo runs in the correct direction by lifting the nose and seeing that the servo responded with an elevator down response.

The AV8OR requires 5vdc for external power/battery charging. Did some searching online and ordered a 12vdc to 5vdc converter that I'll wire into the system for the 5vdc supply.
